University Of Vermont Carrigan Wing Addition

Burlington, Vermont 22,000 sq ft

This new home for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences was the first LEED rated building on the University of Vermont's campus, and it achieved the 'Silver' level. The entire institutional project was completed in one calendar year, from award of design through substantial completion. The completed project provides many educational opportunities for users and visitors including an exterior facade with a fritted glass pattern describing summer and winter food production in Vermont. As well, the department offices and conference rooms are connected with a communicating stair produced with local wood which surrounds an ‘egg’ shaped casual meeting space and is enclosed by a graphic history of food production and history. Design strategies to reduce the building's energy use include maximum natural daylighting in tandem with photo-cell controlled artificial lighting, skylights in hallways, heat recovery units for mechanical ventilation and a super insulated exterior envelope.

Completed with John Anderson Studio.
